One of the greatest benefits any South Florida Flats Anglers club member will attest to is the sharing of information and knowledge within the club. Since it is a non-competitive club that doesn't hold tournaments or point scoring contests, angler members aren't inclined to withhold knowledge.

The club has been in existence for over 25 years. Some members have over 40 years of flats and backcountry experience. Our members' knowledge of the flats and backcountry is very extensive as this is truly the only type of fishing we are involved in. Whatever your interest; be it poling a flat after bonefish, plugging a mangrove shoreline, perfecting your flyfishing skills for redfish, site casting for cruising tarpon, there is a member that will share your interest and enthusiasm and are more than qualified to provide assistance and advise. The club supports all forms of tackle; fly, spin and plug.

The novice flats angler always benefits the most. The amount of information he learns during a year of membership could not be obtained in 5 or ten years fishing alone. The experience of knowing when, where, and how to fish for the species that inhabit the flats and backcountry is held by the club through collective experience. Other points of knowledge are boats, motors, tackle, technique, and of course fishing lore.

The club can boast of several members who have made careers in the sport of flats fishing. The following are currently members or have been members: Captain George Valverde, Captain Jerry Murphy, Captain Bob LeMay, Captain Eric Herstedt, Captain Al Zawalich. Florida Sportsman editors and writers Mike Connor, Alex Suescun, and Jody Moore are past members.

Other benefits of the club include a pre-planned advance fishing schedule prepared by the elected fishing committee, whose selected spots are based on time of year, tide, and targeted species. With a total of 12 trips for the year, the schedule allows members to plan their personal schedule around their anticipated outings well in advance. Some of the highlighted trips are the three-day Key West trip in the spring for tarpon. We also have 2 and three-day trips to the Keys, Pine Island, Stuart, Titusville, and Flamingo and Chokoloskee. There are one or two "Co-ed" trips to venues which are more family oriented during the course of the year.
